Studies on Shanze Xiaozhi (Cholesterol Guard) Chinese Use: High blood fat, hyperlipemia Modern pharmacological studies reveal that: 1. Gastric perfusion of this product to rat and rabbit yields preventive action on dietary fat metabolism disturbance. It markedly lowers the increase of serum TC, TG, LDL-C and TC/HDL-C(P<0.01 or P<0.05) induced by high fat diet. 2. After hyperlipemia has been formed in rabbit with high fat diet, this product markedly lowers TC, TG, LDL-C and TC/HDL-C(P<0.01 or P<0.05) by 4-week gastric perfusion. After 8-week perfusion, this product markedly lowers the TC content in the aorta and heart.(P<0.01), also markedly decreases the size and thickness of atherosclerotic plaque in the aorta (P<0.01). It also lowers the occurrence of coronary atherosclerosis and the degree of obstruction of the vessel lumen by the plaque (P<0.01 or P<0.05). 3. When rats and rabbits are administrated 0.5-2g/kg and 0.2-1.6g/kg respectively, there are no obvious effects on the body weight, food intake amount and behavior or appearance. Experiments show that this product is an effective remedy for lowering blood lipid and atherosclerosis. Toxicological studies: 1. Acute toxic test: The largest tolerable dosage of the product for the mice is 32g/kg daily, equivalent to 592 times the dosage of that for an adult. No death, no toxic reactions, and the behavior, mental state, appetite, stool and body weight growth are normal, indicating that this product is of low acute toxicity and it is safe. 2. Long-term toxic test: Oral administration in the dosage of 2.0g/kg, 4.0g/kg daily (respectively equivalent to 37 and 74 times the clinical daily dose) are given to mice for 20 consecutive weeks, no death is observed. The hematological and biochemical indices and tissue pathological exam are similar to the control group, indicating that there are no obvious toxicity of this product to the blood and liver, kidney and other main organs functions. After interruption of the administration, animals are observed for 4 more weeks, the hematological, biochemical and visceral indices all show no difference with that of the normal control group, indicating that there is no delayed toxicity. Clinical Studies: 27 cases were treated by this product and 18 cases were treated by Zhibituo. The result shows a total effective rate of 92.59% and a markedly effective rate over 70.37% in the first group, while that of the group treated with Zhibituo are 88.89% and 66.70%, respectively the results being basically similar. This product markedly lowers the TC (P<0.01), TG (P<0.01) and atherosclerosis (TC-HDL-C) /HDL-C(P<0.01 or P<0.05) while markedly increasing the HDL-c (P<0.01). The blood-lipid regulating action of these 2 remedies made no obvious difference. No abnormalities were observed in blood, urine, stool routine exams and liver, kidney function tests on the first group. No side effects were observed during the experiment. The preliminary clinical experiment showed that this product yields no side effects and is a rapid and effective remedy for hyperlipemia.
